How To Format RAW USB Drive Pen External Drive Reformat Windows XP
man, today i made a big mistake, i was installing a new OS on a new server, i had backup some files from that server on my USB external drive and i reformatted the whole drive in the process, then when i tried to get my files using a windows computer, all the data was gone, what was worst i could get any data to be saved in the drive now. so it looks like the partition was gone also.

when i tried to add a folder, this is the error i got: Unable To Create Folder

usb format

when i tried to refort it, it didn't do anything:

usb format

so i was stuck here, i didn't know what to do next.

finally, i found the solution to this problem,

so here is how you would fix or reformat your external USB drives, whether is a disk drive or a flash card aka pen drive (pin drive??)

step1. go to start > settings > control panel (see image)

usb format

> Administrative Tools (see image)

usb format

> Computer Management (see image)

usb format

Once you are in computer management, you will see "Disk Management" select "Disk Management and on the right side, you will see your drives.
CAUTION: make sure you ONLY FOLLOW THESE STEPS ON THE DRIVE FOR ASSIGNED TO YOUR USB DRIVE. NEVER DO THE C: DRIVE. SO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH LETTER IS THE YOUR USB DRIVE. I TAKE NO RESPONSABILITY ON ANY DATA LOST.

now that i gave you my WARNING, lets continue. and right click on your USB Drive, in my case, its letter F: so i right click on the F: Drive and select "Format". This is how it should look like on the pictures below.

usb format

now when you have selected "Format" you will get a warning:
This is the active partition on this disk. All data on the partition will be lost. Are you sure you want to format this partition?

usb format

Since i don't have anything on my USB Drive, I click on "Yes"
after you have clicked yes, it will take you to another windows and populate your information, this is my example:
Volume labe: Wolverine
Files System: NTFS
Allocation unit size: Default
[x] Perform a quick format
[ ] Enable file and folder compression

After you have populated all the fields, click OK

usb format

After you click OK, you will get a warning pop-up window:
WARNING: formatting will erase all data on this volume.
To format the volume, click OK. To quit, click Cancel.

Click OK to continue...

usb format

oh crap.. i got this error popup window:
The format did not complete successfully

usb format

maybe you need to create a fat32 partition? if so, this is how i would do it:

creating fat32 volumes
the disk management snap-in in windows xp is a tool for managing your hard disks and the volumes or partitions that they contain. use disk management to create new fat32 volumes, or format an existing volume to use the fat32 file system. you can format basic and dynamic volumes to use fat32.

create a fat32 partition or logical drive
to create a new fat32 partition or logical drive in windows xp, follow these steps:
1. log on as administrator or as a member of the administrators group.
2. click start, then right-click my computer, and then click manage.
3. in the console tree, click disk management.
4. in the disk management window, do one of the following:
• to create a new partition, right-click unallocated space on the basic disk where you want to create the partition, and then click new partition.

-or-
• to create a new logical drive in an extended partition, right-click free space on an extended partition where you want to create the logical drive, and then click new logical drive.
5. in the new partition wizard, click next.
6. click the type of partition that you want to create (primary partition, extended partition, or logical drive), and then click next.
7. specify the size of the partition in the partition size in mb box, and then click next.
8. assign a drive letter or drive path to your new partition or logical drive, and then click next.
9. click format this partition with the following settings, and then do the following:
• click fat32 in the file system box.
• type a name for the volume in the volume label box.

if you want, you can also change the disk allocation unit size, or specify whether you want to perform a quick format.
10. click next.
11. confirm that the options that you selected are correct, and then click finish.

the only way to get the other three options in the format local disk in windows xp is only if you're drive was partitioned as fat, then you will have the other options like fat, fat32 and ntfs.

dude....
simple...
if ur data earlier was on a fat32 partition or an ntfs partition..
then... google for "getdataback for fat" or "getdataback for ntfs"...
its a free data recovery software dat really works...
and u see.. the full version is available free... so dont go in for demo...
this software will recover all ur data...
but.. once ur hard disk should at least be properly detected and not show a not found error....
fine...
contact me.. .for further...

i had the same problem, however the raw drive did not register on disk manager. i had to scroll down to the drive in the listbox and partition and reformat from there. worked great - thanks for the tip.

after being as frustrated as you were on this issue i finally found a way to get around this. using computer management tools, under storage, media, all tasks, free. once i applied this, i was able to format the drive.

i think i might have an answer for you if you haven't already figured it out. i also had a "raw" file system on my usb. so i followed your steps up to right clicking on the drive path and clicking format. however...i did not right click in the window pane to the right, i clicked on the drive path at the bottom where my "c" drive and usb drive were listed. not sure if it really makes a difference but this worked for me. anyhow, i clicked on the white space next to where my usb drive was listed and right clicked on format. a new pop up window appears and you can actually choose from a drop down menu of fat32, ntfs or something else...sorry i don't remember, i just got into all this computer stuff and not really that good at it if you can't tell already. anyways, i clicked fat32 and checked the box "perform quick format." i also changed the drive letter from "e" to "f" and clicked next. after a few minutes...it was formatted and was recognized finally by "my computer." i hope this works for you as it worked for me. sorry i don't have any snap shots like you have but this is as detailed as i could possibly be. thanks for your help though.
