Massasauga rattlesnake can be up to 30 inches long, it is a dark color and has a thick trianglular shape head. It also has dark stripes on the top of its head. Dark blotches are found along its back and sides.
Like all ratlesnakes, the Massasauga rattlesnake has a rattle atn the end of its tail. "Massasauga" comes from the Chippewa Native langauge which means: "great river mouth". The Massasauga rattlesnake environment is in bogs, wet prairies and swamps. Its food menu includes lizards, rodents, birds, and frogs. Becareful if you ever encounter a Massasauga rattlesnake, as they are POISONOUS! Currently it is an endangered snake, so please if you ever come in contact, leave it alone. Unlike other snakes, the massasauga snake is born alive instead out of an egg. The biggest predator to this snake is HUMANS. An interesting fact about these snakes is that males Massasauga rattlesnakes have wrestling matches to win the rights to mate with a female Massasauga rattlesnake.
