Black Eyed Peas started in a Los Angeles high school, with Will.I.Am and Apl de Ap who were part of Tribal Nation, a breakdancing crew. The pair started focusing more on music and formed their own group called Atban Klann, which was an acronym for A Tribe Beyond a Nation.
Eazy-E's Ruthless Records signed the group in 1992, and although Eazy was entusiastic about them, the duo wasn't popular with the rest of the Ruthless camp as many couldn't get into their non-gangster vibe. An album was recorded, but Ruthless, home of N.W.A., shelved it, as they were unsure how to market them.
The death of Eazy-E in 1995 brought the deal with Ruthless to an inevitable end. Will and Apl then recruited another dancer/emcee, Taboo, and took on the name Black Eyed Peas. The trio began gigging around L.A., and built up a following with their dynamic live shows which included a band and an amazing backing vocalist Kim Hill. Their 1998 debut, Behind the Front, received critical acclaim. Featuring guest appearances from Jurassic 5's Chali 2na, De La Soul, and Macy Gray, BEP's sophomore effort, Bridging the Gap, was released in 2000. The group's third album, 2003's Elephunk, featured a new member, Fergie, who replaced Kim Hill.
