even i had the same problem. and as our friend suggested phpinfo() file did not gave me the information.
i had a gallery installed in my server. so i logged as site administrator of menalto gallery. on gd tab it toled me that gd is not installed

i've managed to instal gd but can't link php and gd together.. and i'm sort of frightened if i reinstall php with gd support messing up the whole server and loads of sites...

is it possible to add the php-gd support with out reinstalling php?

I forgot to tell you something, if you don't have access to the linux shell command prompt. you can find out which version of PPH GD Image you have by running the phpinfo file.
