does anyone know if its possible to run a script in the background?

for example i want to run a script but it takes a while to install a program that i am running, so i want the user to wait like atleast 3 mintues while the script i running in the background.

Such scripts are not recommended for shared hosting environments as they might be stopped by the server (for using too much CPU time and memory, of course). But, if you want to run something in the background, without keeping the main script loading for the whole time, do the following exec("php /path/to/script.php &"); yes, that's a & at the end of the command which is equivalent to "start \b" in Windows environment.
