How Many Characters In The Description Meta Tag?

i have google webmasters tools and there is a section that says:

Meta description issues ................. Pages

Duplicate meta descriptions ............. 24
Long meta descriptions .................. 0
Short meta descriptions ................. 1,007

as you can see, i have alot of pages with short meta description. but i want to know how many characters is the max so i know how to code my websites so i wont get these error

160 characters

im not sure but i think its 160, try 150 just in case and monitor
