ok, summer fast approaching and two years ago i had to replace my car's timing belt. but while changing the timing belt, i had to remove one of the air conditioner's hose. that meant i had to discharged the ac. i took it to a shop to have them discharge it. the guy at the shop just put a screw driver on the low pressure valve of the ac unit and let the air escape. since then, i've been wanting to take my car to have the ac recharged... but that's gonna cost me alot of money...
today i was at kmart buying some oil for my car and i noticed that they sell an air conditioning recharge kit. so i thot, hmm, i can do this myself.... but it was $25 dollars.. so i thought i go to the auto parts store.. so i went to kragens and when i got there, it was $30 dollars... hell no, im not gonna pay $5 dollars more.. so i went back to kmart and bout a recharge kit.
these are the step i took to recharge my ac

the first thing to do is to check what kind of refrigerant you need. you can find this information on the hood of your car. as you can see from the picture here, my says i need r-134a

this is what the bottle says it does:
fast and easy accurately restores a/c cooling:
* replaces lost refrigerant & oil
* safely seals most leaks on hoses, gaskets and or-rings
* color-coded in-line gauge provides for accurate fill.
contents: 15 oz refrigirant 134a (1,1,1,2 tetrafluoroethane), 3 oz system-safe leak sealer, lubrincant qwikboost a/c performance booster, and a/c system cleaner.

ok, the first step is to find low pressure port.
the low-pressure port of the a/c system usually has a blue or black dust cap and is located on the larger diameter tubing that runs between the evaporator (in the dashboard) and the compressor (on the engine). unscrew the dust cap.
note: on my car. the low pressure cap had the letter l in it to indicate low

start engine and set a/c to max cool. meaning go inside your car and turn on the air conditioner and put it to the maximum cool allowed so its at the coldest

now connect the charge coupler to low-side port (pull back coupler sleeve and push coupler onto port, release sleeve to lock-on). Check gauge reading, refer to char below for diagnosis:
| PRESSURE GAUGE CHART: Pressure reading sshown in the chart are typical for ambient temeratures of 75 to 85 fahrenheit. the pressure will be higher at higher temperatures and lower in lower temperatures. | ||
| LOW | 0-25 psi | add refrigerant |
| FILLED | 25-45 psi | system has proper amount of refrigerant |
| ALERT | 45-65 psi | do not add refrigerant! Seek professional help |
| WARNING | 65-200 psi | Do not add refrigerant! Your systemhas a problem other than low refrigerant. Seek professional help. |
In my case, the gauge show it was low, so i go to the next step

once you have your engine on and you have connected the charger and the ac is on max cool, shake the can well, press the dispensing button completely, rotate top of can between 12 o clock and 3 o clock every 2-3 seconds while continually shaking can back and forth. continue process until can is empty in about 10-15 minutes or until correct amount of refrigerant is charged into ac system. you will know, when pressure reading should in the blue psi range. see the pressure gauge above
